Description

45 King's Gate in Aberdeen is a building from the later 19th century, featuring a single storey and an attic, with a two-storey block adjoining to the west. It is constructed from coursed Aberdeen bond granite rubble, which is finely finished at the margins. The building has a base course, chamfered cills, and an eaves course.

The northwest elevation, facing King's Gate, is asymmetrical and consists of nine bays. To the right, there is a two-storey, two-bay near-square-plan block with regular fenestration on both the ground and first floors, and a gableted louvred ventilator at the center of the roof. To the left, a three-bay block features a central doorway with a replacement door and a letterbox fanlight, a gableted window that breaks the eaves in the attic, and an iron finial at the apex. The flanking bays on the ground floor have single windows, while small skylights are present in the attic. There are two gabled bays on the left, each with a single window and a narrow opening set in the gablehead, along with kneelered gables topped with iron finials. The outer left flanking bays also have regular fenestration.

The southwest elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a tripartite window at the center of the ground floor and a gableted tripartite window breaking the eaves above on the first floor. An iron brattishing is present at the roof apex.

The southeast elevation was not visible in 2000. The northeast elevation features a gabled bipartite window breaking the eaves at the center, with a narrow opening set in the gablehead and a chamfered outer right angle. There are 20th-century additions to the outer left, which were predominantly not seen in 2000.

The building has a variety of timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead ridges, coped stone skews with blocked skewputts, and coped stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not visible in 2000. The property includes two pairs of granite ashlar square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps at King's Gate, along with rubble boundary walls.
