Description
This is a 1899 villa designed by Robert Gordon Wilson, with styling inspired by the Jacobean architectural period. It is built over two storeys and has an attic. The Forest Road and Carlton Place elevations are constructed from rough-faced grey granite ashlar, with lighter grey granite dressings. The remaining areas are built with granite rubble, with a finely finished appearance to the margins. Features include a base course, moulded cill courses and string courses between the floors, swept-down eaves, and piend-roofed dormers to the attic floor.
The south-west elevation, facing Forest Road, is asymmetrical. A gabled bay on the left features a three-light canted window extending through the ground and first floors, creating a balcony to the attic floor. This balcony has a scalloped crenellated parapet and spherical finials. A round-arched window is set within the shaped gablehead, topped with a square-plan obelisk finial. To the right of this bay is a bipartite window on the ground floor, a single window on the first floor, and a bipartite window in the attic.
The south-east elevation has a gabled section on the left, with a variety of window openings. The north-east elevation is near-symmetrical, presenting two bays with gabled features. There's a window on the ground floor to the left, a modern semi-circular conservatory to the right, and regular window placement on the first floor. A round-arched window is set into the gablehead.
The north-west elevation, facing Carlton Place, is also asymmetrical, with three bays. A round-arched doorway is centrally located on the ground floor, with a deeply set door and a flanking window. A bipartite window sits above on the first floor, and a four-light dormer is set into the attic. Two gabled bays extend to the right, displaying regular fenestration on both the ground and first floors. A small, round-arched window with leaded glass and chamfered reveals is centred within the gablehead. A cusped string moulding runs along the gablehead stack.
The windows are timber sash and case windows with small panes in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey slate and has metal ridges. Coped stone skews with square-plan obelisk skewputts are present on the Forest Road and Carlton Place gables; the remainder have blocked skewputts. Coped gablehead stacks are topped with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also visible. The interior was not inspected in 2000.
Low, coped, rough-faced granite walls define the boundaries to the south-west and north-west, with Aberdeen bond walls elsewhere. There is a single gatepier to the south, with a scrolled cap, which is shared with the properties at 39 and 41 Forest Road (listed separately). Two square-plan gatepiers, corniced and topped with spherical finials, are located to the west.
