Description

37 Forest Road is a double villa built in 1896, likely designed by architect John Cameron and constructed by builder John Morgan, with a later addition to the rear completed by John Rust in 1909. The building is two stories high with an attic and features a four-bay symmetrical principal elevation. The front is made of coursed rough-faced grey granite ashlar with finely finished margins, while the rest of the structure is built from granite rubble. It includes a base course, ground floor cill course, dividing band course, first floor cill course, and an eaves course.

The principal elevation consists of two mirrored, semi-detached villas with doorways in the two central bays at ground level. These doorways have stop-chamfered reveals and are corniced with consoles, featuring pilastered panelled timber doors flanked by glazed panels and letterbox fanlights. Above, there are bipartite windows on the first floor with stop-chamfered reveals, and tripartite pedimented timber dormers in the attic, each adorned with a sunflower patera at the center of the pediment. The ground and first floors also have three-light canted windows, which create a balcony effect at the attic level, with a pedimented attic floor flanked by two deep scrolls and tripartite windows centered in each. The pediment is further decorated with scrolled acroteria and a sunflower patera.

The southeast and northwest elevations are gabled, while the northeast elevation is near-symmetrical and features the 1909 additions. This includes a single-storey addition that projects from the central bays at ground level, with windows above on the first floor and a tripartite rectangular dormer to the right in the attic. There are also two skylights above, with the outer angles canted. Shallow canted windows are present through the ground and first floors of the outer left and right bays, and there are tripartite piend-roofed dormers in the attic.

The villa predominantly has two-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead ridges, and coped stone skews with scrolled skewputts. The gablehead and ridge stacks are corniced with square-plan cans, and it has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not seen in 2000. The property also includes low coped rough-faced granite boundary walls to the southwest, with a single gatepier to the left that has a scrolled cap, shared with the neighboring properties at 39 and 41 Forest Road. The remainder of the boundary features granite and brick coped rubble walls.
