Description
This building, located at 33 Forest Road in Aberdeen, was constructed in 1886 by builders McRobbie and Milne. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay villa featuring tooled coursed granite ashlar on the southwest elevation, Aberdeen bond granite on the southeast, and rubble on the remaining sides, all with finely finished margins. The structure includes a base course with chamfered cills, a dividing band course, and an eaves course.
The southwest elevation facing Forest Road is asymmetrical, featuring a segmental-arched doorway with chamfered reveals and a keystone detail in the central bay at ground level. This doorway is accessed by stone steps leading to a panelled timber door with stained glass upper panels and a fanlight. Above this door is a window on the first floor, and the elevation is topped with a dentil moulded cornice and a pyramidal roof that breaks the eaves, complete with an iron finial at the apex. To the left, there is a window on the ground floor and another on the first floor above, both with dentil moulded eaves brackets and a pyramidal roof with an iron finial. To the right, a broad canted bay projects, featuring windows on each facet at both the ground and first floors, a piended roof, and a round-arched dormer at the center with an iron finial.
The southeast elevation, facing Desswood Place, is near-symmetrical and gabled, with a round-arched window featuring keystone detail at the center of the gablehead, and windows on the ground and first floors.
The northeast elevation is asymmetrical and gabled, with an opening at the center of the ground floor and a tall stair window with decorative glazing at the center of the first floor. There is a canted window extending through the ground and first floors, breaking the eaves with a piended roof on the left flanking bay, and a rectangular dormer above. A gabled bay advances to the right, featuring an addition at ground level with a doorway and windows on the left return, and a rectangular dormer in the attic.
The northwest elevation is also gabled. The villa predominantly features two-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead ridges, coped stone skews with moulded skewputts, and corniced gablehead stacks with octagonal cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron and include decorative hoppers.
The interior was not seen in 2000. The property also includes square-plan rough-faced granite gatepiers with pyramidal caps on the southwest side, flanked by low coped granite walls, and brick coped rubble walls to the rear.
