Description

Callan Lodge, located at 31 Forest Road in Aberdeen, is a half-timbered villa designed by architect A. Marshal Mackenzie in 1899. This two-storey, three-bay building features rough-faced coursed grey granite that is finely finished at the margins, with rubble on the southeast and northeast elevations. Notable architectural details include an ovolo moulded first-floor cill course and harled half-timbered gables on the Forest Road elevation, as well as overhanging eaves with timber bargeboards.

The southwest elevation facing Forest Road is asymmetrical, with a recessed central bay that has a gabled window breaking the eaves. This bay is flanked by a window on the left and a two-leaf glazed door on the right, both of which have roofs that sweep down over them. To the left, there is a narrow gabled bay with tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, and a narrow window on the left return at ground level. The right side features another gabled bay with tripartite windows on both floors.

The southeast elevation is also asymmetrical, with a gable on the right and an off-centre window in the gablehead. The northeast elevation presents an asymmetrical design as well, with an advanced gabled bay on the left that includes a single-storey addition at ground level and a re-entrant angle to the right. This elevation has a tripartite window on the first floor of the centre bay, topped with a shallow cat-slide roof, and another tripartite window on the ground floor of the right bay, along with a canted gableted dormer above.

The northwest elevation, facing Desswood Place, is nearly symmetrical and features a gabled design. It includes a piend-roofed porch at ground level, supported by cast-iron columns with decorative timber balustrading below the eaves. The porch is glazed and panelled on the left return, with a deeply chamfered doorway to the left and queenpost details at the gablehead.

The villa predominantly has two-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grey slate and lead ridges. Gablehead stacks and stacks breaking the pitch are present, with circular cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, much of the original interior remains intact, featuring fluted pilasters that support round arches in the hallway, a staircase with turned balusters, original doors and mouldings, some fire surrounds, and stained glass windows.

The property is also complemented by square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps to the south, and boundary walls made of coped coursed rough-faced granite to the west, which are tooled to read "CALLAN LODGE 31" at the northwest angle. These walls sweep up to the left of the gate, with brick and granite coped rubble walls making up the remainder.
