Description
This is a two-storey and attic villa, built in 1908 to a design by George Coutts. Constructed of coursed, roughly faced grey granite, with contrasting pink granite dressings—finely finished at the northeast elevation—the villa exhibits stylized Old English detailing. The lower course is of pink granite, and the exterior features chamfered reveals, a first-floor string course, long and short quoins, and elaborately carved timber bargeboards. The northeast elevation, the principal facade, is asymmetrical. A pierced timber gabled porch is centrally positioned at ground floor, featuring a pointed archway, a dentil cornice, a shallow Tudor-arched doorway with a two-leaf timber door having linenfold panelling and glazed upper panes, and flanking arrowslit openings. A five-light mullion and transomed timber oriel window is set off-centre to the left of the first floor; a bipartite window occupies the gablehead of the attic floor, topped with an iron finial. A six-light canted window with a crenellated parapet is situated in the bay to the right at ground floor, with a quadripartite window above, and a bipartite window set into the gablehead. Another six-light canted window extends through the ground and first floors, supporting an advanced attic floor with a piended roof. A stepped-up attic wallhead dormer, featuring a five-light design and supported by brackets with colonettes, is also present, along with a projecting gablet above a deep cornice. The northwest elevation is gabled and asymmetrical, with a timber oriel window in the gablehead and irregular fenestration elsewhere, and including a single-storey and attic wing adjoining the outer right. The southwest elevation also presents asymmetry, incorporating an advanced single-storey and attic wing, a conservatory to the centre, and irregular openings on returns. A piend-roofed central bay is advanced, with a ground-floor doorway to the left and a bipartite window flanking it to the right. A bipartite window is centred on the first floor. Tripartite windows are set to the ground and first floors of the bay to the right, while a pair of piend-roofed tripartite windows occupy the attic floor, together with a central skylight and another modern skylight alongside. The southeast elevation is gabled, with a shallow, piend-roofed glazed porch positioned centrally on the ground floor. Predominantly square-pane leaded casement windows are visible throughout. The roof is rosemary tiled, with pierced terracotta ridge detailing. Decorative granite wallhead and gablehead stacks, topped with circular cans, are present, along with iron rainwater goods. The interior has been subdivided horizontally; the main staircase has been altered, though some original decorative features remain, including plasterwork cornicing in the entrance hall and key rooms. A contemporary garage with panelled and glazed sliding timber doors, a half-timbered gablehead, and a jerkin-headed roof with a terracotta ridge is attached to the southwest. Low coped granite walls delineate the northeast boundary, with gatepiers shared with adjacent properties; brick and granite coped walls form the remainder of the boundary.
