Description

This is a substantial villa and wing, built in 1900 by William Ruxton. It is located in Aberdeen and is characterised by its finely crafted granite construction.

The main building is a two-storey and attic, four-bay villa, with a single-storey and attic, three-bay wing attached. The north-east elevation, which is the principal facade, is asymmetrical and features finely finished, tooled, grey granite to the margins, with the remainder in Aberdeen bond granite. A rough-faced dark grey granite base course runs along the base, with ground and first-floor cill courses and a dividing string course. The eaves overhang with queenpost detailing to the gableheads. A gableted timber porch with a panelled timber door, reached by stone steps, is situated in the penultimate bay to the right of the north-east elevation. Stained glass windows flank the door, with quadripartite stained glass windows to the porch returns. Advanced gabled bays are positioned to the left and right, featuring tripartite windows to the ground and first floors of the bay to the right, and a quadripartite window with blind panels above the ground floor window of the bay to the left. Above this is a 12-pane stained glass mullion and transomed window. A recessed bay to the left has a panelled timber door with leaded upper panels and fanlight, with a window flanking to the left, and a gableted window above the first floor. The wing to the outer left features an oversized five-light canted bay with a scalloped crenellated parapet and a half-hexagonal roof with a finial to the apex. A panelled timber door with a large plate glass fanlight sits in the central bay, flanked by two windows to the left; tripartite windows with catslide roofs extend to the attic floor.

The north-west elevation includes a ground floor addition and a gabled bay to the right, with a smaller gablet to the left. The south-west elevation is asymmetrical, with a variety of openings and gables, and features a modern skylight to the attic floor. The south-east elevation, which is predominantly obscured by the wing, is M-gabled, with a single window in an angled gable.

Predominantly timber sash and case windows are present, with leaded and stained glass upper sashes. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead ridges, and corniced gablehead and ridge stacks have circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also a feature. The interiors were not inspected in 2000.

The property is set within boundary walls and gatepiers. Square-plan gatepiers are located on the north-west side, flanked by low rough-faced granite coped walls; rubble walls define the remainder of the boundary.
