Description

46 Forest Road, including the boundary walls and gatepiers, is a double villa built in 1894 by John Rust. It is two storeys with an attic and features four bays. The villa is constructed from tooled coursed grey granite, with contrasting light grey long and short dressings finely finished at the margins of the northeast elevation, while the rest is made of coursed granite rubble. Architectural details include a base course, band course, eaves course, and long and short quoins. The doorways are corniced with consoles and there are panelled aprons.

The northeast elevation, which is the principal facade, consists of two mirrored houses. The building is near-symmetrical, with 3-light canted windows on the ground and first floors of the central two bays. Parapets create balconies at the attic level, and the pedimented attic is flanked by deep scrolls, featuring bipartite windows in the center and blind oculi set in the pediment, topped with a stone finial. Ground floor doorways are located in the outer left and right bays, with a pair of replacement double doors for 44 and 44A Forest Road, and a single pilastered panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight for 46 Forest Road. A gableted window breaks the eaves above, and the details mirror the central pediments, with rectangular and piend-roofed dormers in the attic.

The northwest elevation is gabled and features a stepped tripartite stair window at the center, with a 3-light window above and irregular fenestration elsewhere. There is a two-storey wing adjoining the outer right. The southwest elevation has service wings at the outer left and right, with modern rectangular dormers in the attic. The southeast elevation mirrors the northwest, with a gabled design, a central stepped tripartite stair window, and irregular fenestration, along with a two-storey wing to the outer right.

The villa has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a lead ridge, and coped stone skews with scrolled skewputts. The gablehead and ridge stacks are coped with square-plan cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000. The gatepiers and boundary walls consist of a low granite wall to the northeast and rubble walls for the remainder.
