Description

8 Rubislaw Den North is a double villa built in 1899 by John Henderson. It is two stories high with an attic and features four bays. The building is constructed from rough-faced coursed grey granite, which is finely finished at the margins of the south elevation, while the rest is made of rubble. It has a rough-faced base course, a first-floor cill course, and an eaves blocking course.

The south elevation is symmetrical and consists of two mirrored houses in a four-bay arrangement. The central two bays on the ground floor have doorways with stone scrolled brackets beneath the lintel. The doorway to 8 Rubislaw Den North is an Ionic pilastered entrance with panelled timber doors, flanked by glazed panels and topped with letterbox fanlights. Above each doorway is a single window on the first floor, and there are scrolled segmental-arched pediments above the dormers in the attic. The outer left and right bays feature three-light canted windows on both the ground and first floors, creating a balcony effect for the attic floor. The wallhead rises to a tripartite gableted window in the attic, flanked by deep granite scrolls.

The east elevation has a gabled design with a two-storey shallow wing featuring a piended roof near the centre, along with a doorway and window on the left return. The north elevation was not visible in 2000. The west elevation is also gabled, with a two-storey wing near the centre that has a doorway and window on the right return.

The villa has replacement PVCu windows at 8 Rubislaw Den North, while 10 Rubislaw Den North retains timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead ridges, stone skews, and coped gablehead stacks with circular cans. The building features cast-iron rainwater goods.

The boundary walls consist of low coped rough-faced granite walls to the south, with a gateway to the southeast that has scrolled coping, and rubble walls for the remainder.
