Description

4 Rubislaw Den North, including its boundary walls, is a double villa built around 1880, possibly by Matthews and Mackenzie. The building is two stories high with an attic and features four bays. It is constructed from rough-faced coursed grey granite, with finely finished margins, a rough-faced base course, a dividing band course, and overhanging eaves adorned with timber bargeboards.

The southeast elevation consists of four bays that form two mirrored houses. It has broad doorways in the center of the ground floor, featuring pilastered panelled timber doors flanked by glazed panels and letterbox fanlights. Above these doors are windows in the center of the first floor. The outer left and right bays are gableted and include a three-light canted window spanning both the ground and first floors. The attic features skylights, with modern skylights added to 2 Rubislaw Den North.

The northeast elevation, facing Forest Road, is asymmetrical. It has a three-light canted window to the right on the ground floor and a bipartite window above it on the first floor. A gabled bay is advanced to the left, with a pair of narrow windows that have panelled aprons on both the ground and first floors.

The northwest elevation is nearly symmetrical, with single-storey and attic wings advanced at the center bays, flanked by near-regular window arrangements. The outer left and right bays are gabled.

The southwest elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a three-light canted window to the left on the ground floor and a bipartite window above it on the first floor. A gabled bay is advanced to the right, accompanied by a pair of narrow windows with panelled aprons on both the ground and first floors.

The villa predominantly has two-pane timber sash and case windows, with decoratively leaded upper sashes on the northeast elevation of 4 Rubislaw Den North. The roof is piended and gabled, covered with grey slate and lead ridges, and features coped gableheads and stacks that break the pitch, with circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The interiors were not seen in 2000. The boundary walls consist of low coped Aberdeen bond granite walls on the southeast and northeast sides, with rubble walls on the remaining sides.
