Description
This is a two-storey and attic villa, built in 1899 to a design by architect Arthur Clyne, with John Morgan as the builder. It sits on an L-shaped plan at 2 Rubislaw Den South, Aberdeen.
The villa is constructed primarily of rough-faced pink and grey granite in a coursed Aberdeen bond pattern, with finer granite detailing to the margins. The north elevation is of rubble stone. Architectural features include a base course, a dividing band course, and overhanging eaves.
The south elevation, facing Rubislaw Den South, is symmetrical. The central three bays are in pink rough-faced granite and feature a crowstepped gable with wallhead stacks. A recessed entrance bay in grey granite is marked by a round arch with impost and keystone details. The entrance itself is a pilastered timber doorpiece, with a panelled timber door, letterbox fanlight, flanking glazed panels, and a central lamp. A tripartite window sits above the door, and a decoratively glazed roundel is positioned in the attic. Single windows are located in the ground and first floors of the flanking bays to the left and right. Regular windows are found in the outer left and right bays on both floors, with modern skylights in the attic.
The east elevation, facing Forest Road, is asymmetrical and two bays wide. A gabled bay on the left has a jerkin head and a canted, tripartite pink granite window with waisted mullions on the ground floor. A window is above on the first floor, and a tripartite window sits within the gablehead. The bay to the right has regular fenestration on both ground and first floors, with a dormer window in the attic. The outer right angle of the ground floor is curved with corbelling to create an angle on the first floor.
The north elevation is gabled with irregular window openings. The west elevation is asymmetrical and three bays wide. A gabled bay projects to the right with a jerkin head, a bowed window advanced on the ground floor (with three window openings), a single window above on the first floor, and a tripartite window set in the gablehead. Two recessed bays are situated to the left, with a doorway on the outer left and regular fenestration elsewhere.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, although some on the north elevation are PVCu. The roof is of grey slate with lead and terracotta ridges. Coped wallhead and gablehead stacks are topped with circular cans. Rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVCu. The interior was not inspected in 2000.
To the southeast, square-plan ashlar gate piers, capped with spherical caps, mark the entrance. Low coped granite walls flank the driveway, stepping up to the west, with rubble walls completing the boundary.
