Description
This is a pair of semi-detached villas, designed by Arthur Clyne and built by John Morgan in 1896. They are located at 14 and 16 Forest Road, Aberdeen.
The villas are constructed of coursed, roughly faced grey granite ashlar, with contrasting pale grey, finely tooled margins. Architectural detailing includes a base course, ground floor cill course, dividing band course, a moulded first floor cill course, an eaves course, and a parapet between the gables of the main elevation.
The northeast (principal) elevation is symmetrical, comprising two mirrored, two-bay villas. The central bays each feature a doorway at ground floor with reveals that narrow towards the base. Decorative volute brackets support the lintels, and the doors are panelled timber with glazed panels and letterbox fanlights. Above, there's a window in each bay on the first floor. Canted three-light windows extend through the ground and first floors in the outer left and right bays, creating a balcony to the attic floor. The attic floor is pedimented, flanked by two deep scrolls, with a window centred in each (replacement glazing for 14 Forest Road). Each pediment features scrolled acroteria and a sunflower patera at the centre. A skylight is positioned in the centre of the attic.
The northwest elevation is gabled and features a lean-to addition to the right at ground floor, with a panelled door and a window above on the return.
The southwest elevation is nearly symmetrical, with four bays and single-story and attic wings projecting to the left and right. These wings have three-light, piend-roofed dormers. The first floor has regular window placement. The centre of the attic features two canted dormers with skylights above, flanked to the outer left and right by broader rectangular dormers with catslide roofs.
The southeast elevation is gabled, with a lean-to addition to the left and a doorway with a window above on the return.
The windows are largely 2-pane sash and case, with PVCu frames at 14 Forest Road and timber frames at 16 Forest Road. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a decorative terracotta ridge. Stone skews are present, along with coped gablehead stacks and stacks that rise from the roof pitch at the rear, topped with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present. The interiors were not inspected in 2000.
The property is enclosed by coped, roughly faced grey granite walls along the northeast side, with gates on either side. There is a single gatepier to the outer left, featuring a grey granite shaft that sweeps up from a plinth and is topped by a scrolled cap. Brick and granite coped rubble walls form the remainder of the boundary.
