Description
This is a pair of semi-detached villas, designed by architect Arthur Clyne and built by John Morgan in 1896. They are located at 9 and 11 Forest Road, Aberdeen.
The villas are constructed of coursed, roughly faced grey granite ashlar, with contrasting pale grey, tooled and finely finished margins. The detailing includes a base course, ground floor cill course, dividing band course, moulded first floor cill course, eaves course, and a parapet along the principal elevation.
The southwest elevation, which is the main facade, is symmetrical and comprises two mirrored, semi-detached villas, each with two bays. Doorways are centrally positioned at ground floor, with reveals that narrow towards the base and are supported by decorative volute brackets above timber, panelled doors. The door to number 9 Forest Road is glazed to the upper panels, flanked by glazed panels, and has a letterbox fanlight; a window sits above each bay on the first floor. Five-light rectangular windows are advanced through the ground and first floors of the bays to the outer left and right. A parapet encloses a balcony to the attic floor, which is pedimented and flanked by two deep scrolls, with a window centred to each (replacement glazing is present at number 11 Forest Road). The pediment is adorned with scrolled acroteria and sunflower patera. There are skylights centrally located within the attic.
The southeast elevation is gabled, featuring a window in the centre of both the ground and first floors. A lean-to addition extends to the right, with a window centrally placed and a glazed door on the left return. Boundary walls adjoin the property to the left and right.
The northeast elevation is near-symmetrical, with four bays. Broad openings are positioned in the centre bays of the ground floor, with single-storey and attic wings adjoining to the left and right. Each wing has a three-light, piend-roofed dormer. Regular fenestration is found on the first floor, and two canted dormers are centrally placed in the attic, each with a skylight. Broad rectangular dormers with catslide roofs flank the outer left and right.
The northwest elevation is gabled, with a lean-to addition to the left and a doorway on the right return. Boundary walls border the property on both sides.
Most windows are timber sash and case, with two-pane lower sashes at number 11 Forest Road; replacement timber windows are present on number 9 Forest Road. The roof is covered in grey slate, with decorative terracotta ridge tiles. Stone skews are also noticeable. Coped gablehead stacks rise from the rear, with a stack breaking the pitch and circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are used. The interiors were not inspected in 2000.
Gate piers and boundary walls constructed of coped, roughly faced grey granite extend along the southwest side, surmounted by railings and gates to the centre. Piers flank the gates on both sides (the pier on the left is shared with 13-19 Forest Road), featuring a grey granite shaft swept up from a plinth with a roughly faced neck surmounted by a scrolled cap. Brick-coped rubble walls make up the remainder of the boundary.
