Description

20 Rubislaw Den South in Aberdeen is a villa built in 1900 by Robert Gordon Wilson. This two-storey and attic structure features three bays and is constructed from tooled coursed grey granite, with contrasting light grey long and short dressings that are finely finished along the margins of the south elevation. The rest of the building is made from granite rubble. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a dividing string course, overhanging eaves, and timber bargeboards.

The south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a chamfered doorway at the center, which is accessed by stone steps. This doorway has a two-leaf panelled timber door topped with a three-pane fanlight. Above, there is a window at the center of the first floor. The right flanking bay has tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, while the attic floor includes a piend-roofed tripartite dormer. The left bay is slightly advanced and includes a five-light canted window at the center of the ground floor, a parapet forming a balcony at the first floor, and a tripartite window above, set in a half-timbered gablehead.

The east elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a gabled bay to the left and irregular fenestration elsewhere. The north elevation includes a two-storey gabled wing adjoining to the left, while the west elevation is asymmetrical with a gabled section to the right and a single window on the ground floor.

The villa predominantly has timber sash and case windows with small-pane upper sashes. The roof is covered with piended and gabled grey slate, featuring lead ridges and coped gablehead stacks with circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The interior was not seen in 2000. The property is complemented by square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps on the south side, along with a low coped granite wall between them and granite and brick coped rubble walls surrounding the remainder of the property.
