Description

26 Rubislaw Den South in Aberdeen is a villa designed by Matthews and Mackenzie in 1892. This two-storey and attic building features a two-bay layout, constructed from rough-faced coursed grey granite with finely finished pink granite margins on the south elevation, while the rest of the structure is made of Aberdeen bond rubble. The design includes a base course, a pink granite band, cill and lintel courses, an eaves course, overhanging eaves, and architraved openings on the south elevation.

The south elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing bipartite windows on the ground and first floors of the left bay, with a gableted bipartite dormer above. To the right, an advanced pedimented bay features tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors.

The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, is also asymmetrical, with a lean-to wing at the center. It has a flat-roofed open porch supported by a Tuscan column on the left side at ground level, leading to a panelled timber door flanked by glazed panels and a letterbox fanlight. The remainder of this elevation has irregular fenestration and a service wing on the outer right.

On the north elevation, there is a three-light canted window spanning the ground and first floors of the right bay, with regular openings elsewhere. A wing adjoins the outer left, and there are three irregularly placed modern skylights in the attic.

The west elevation is symmetrical with a gabled design, featuring blind openings on the left and right sides of the ground floor and a window at the center of the first floor. The villa predominantly has two-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a pierced terracotta ridge, corniced gablehead stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000. The property also includes square-plan granite ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps on the south side, low coped ashlar walls between them, and brick and granite coped rubble walls for the remainder of the boundary.
