Description

29 Rubislaw Den South is a double villa built in 1896 by Walker and Duncan. It is two stories tall with an attic and features four bays. The building is constructed from rough-faced coursed grey granite, with contrasting light grey finely finished dressings on the north elevation, while the rest is made of coursed granite rubble. It has a base course, ground and first floor cill courses, raised margins, chamfered reveals, and an eaves course.

The north elevation, which is the principal facade, displays symmetrical mirrored double villas. It has architraved doorways in the center two bays at the ground floor, with pilastered panelled timber doors flanked by glazed panels and letterbox fanlights. Above, there are piend-roofed bipartite windows on the first floor, supported by decorative granite brackets, and terracotta finials at the apexes. The outer left and right bays feature piend-roofed four-light canted windows on both the ground and first floors, also topped with terracotta finials. Skylights are present in the attic.

The west elevation is gabled, with openings in the center bays of the ground and first floors, and a small off-centre opening on the left side of the attic floor. There is a two-storey wing adjoining the outer right. The south elevation was not visible in 2000. The east elevation is also gabled, with openings near the center at the ground, first, and attic floors, and a two-storey wing adjoining the outer left.

The villa predominantly features timber sash and case windows with decoratively astragalled upper sashes. The roof is covered in grey slate with terracotta and lead ridges, and it has stone skews with scrolled skewputts. The gablehead and ridge stacks are coped with octagonal cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.

The gatepiers and boundary walls consist of square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps on the north side, low coped rubble walls in between, and brick and granite coped rubble walls on the remaining sides.
