Description
This is a two-storey, three-bay villa built in 1879 by Arthur Clyne. It is located at 24 Rubislaw Den South, Aberdeen. The villa exhibits Gothic detailing and is constructed primarily of tooled coursed grey granite, with finely finished margins to the south elevation and coursed rubble elsewhere. A rough-faced base course, dividing band course, and first-floor cill course are visible, along with overhanging eaves, timber bargeboards, and decorative Kingpost details to the gableheads. Iron sunflower finials top the apexes.
The south (principal) elevation is asymmetrical. A doorway is positioned in the centre bay of the ground floor, featuring a fine pilastered and moulded surround, a panelled timber door, and a bull's-eye leaded fanlight above. A narrow, piend-roofed window breaks the eaves on the first floor above, while a bipartite window sits on the ground floor to the right. A gabled bay is slightly advanced to the left and includes a tripartite window on the ground floor, dated "1879" on the upper sash of the central pane, and another tripartite window in the centre of the first floor.
The east elevation is nearly symmetrical, featuring a window with a gablet above its centre on the first floor. The north elevation is asymmetrical, with a doorway flanked to the right by a small ground-floor window and a large stained-glass stair window. A tripartite window is situated on the ground floor to the right, while a single window occupies the ground floor to the left. Piend-roofed bipartite windows break the eaves on both the left and right sides of the first floor. A single-storey wing adjoins the outer left side. The west elevation is blank, punctuated by a central gablet.
The villa largely retains its original timber sash and case windows. Many have decorative stained glass upper sashes, particularly on the south elevation. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead ridges. Coped wallhead stacks feature octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods include scalloped top hoppers.
The interior remains largely intact, showing fine original features. These include a panelled inner door with glazed leaded upper panes and flanking panels, skirting boards, cornicing, architraves, and panelled doors. A distinctive turned timber balustrade graces the staircase, complemented by decorative newel posts. Fine panelled timber fire surrounds are present, along with some surviving light fittings.
Ancillary structures include granite ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps to the south, connected by low coped ashlar walls, with granite and brick coped rubble walls forming the remainder of the boundary. A diagonally boarded timber lean-to summer house, set on a brick plinth and adjoining the north wall, features pierced timber bargeboards, a slate roof, and a brick stack with an octagonal can.
