Description

27 and 27A Rubislaw Den South in Aberdeen is a 2-storey and attic villa built in 1897 by John Morgan. Originally a single dwelling, it has been converted into two separate homes. The villa features rough-faced coursed grey granite that is finely finished at the margins on the north elevation, while the rest of the building is made of coursed rubble. It has a dark grey base course, a ground floor cill course, a dividing band course that is moulded at the first floor cill, and an eaves course with overhanging eaves.

The north elevation is asymmetrical, with a broad doorway in the center bay at ground level. The original door has been replaced with a pair of panelled doors that have glazed upper sections and leaded fanlights. Above this, there is a window in the center bay of the first floor, which has a timber apron. The attic features a modern rectangular dormer. To the left, there is a gabled bay with a 3-light canted window spanning the ground and first floors, and the gablehead plane is advanced on blocked brackets with a bipartite window in the center.

The west elevation has granite on the left bay and a modern addition with shingles on the right. The south elevation was not visible in 2000, while the east elevation is gabled.

The villa predominantly has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, with geometrically leaded upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a pierced terracotta ridge. The skews are coped stone with blocked skewputts, and the rainwater goods are a mix of cast-iron and PVCu.

The boundary walls consist of low coped Aberdeen bond walls on the north side and brick and granite coped walls on the other sides.
