Description

60 and 60A Rubislaw Den South is a villa built in 1895 by W and J Smith & Kelly. This two-storey and attic building features a three-bay design, constructed from tooled coursed grey granite ashlar with finely finished margins on the south elevation, while the rest is made of Aberdeen bond granite rubble. The base course is rough-faced, and the windows have chamfered cills.

The south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a flight of stone steps leading to a central round-arched doorway at the ground floor. This doorway has a two-leaf panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight and a blind tympanum, with a single window above. To the left, there is a three-light canted window on the ground floor, and a bipartite window on the first floor. The attic has a double-width rectangular dormer. To the right, an advanced gabled bay has chamfered angles at the ground floor and corbelled right angles at the first floor, with a four-light canted window spanning both floors, a small window set in the gablehead with an ogee lintel, and a stone finial at the apex. There is also a window on the first floor of the left return.

The east elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a panelled and glazed timber door to the left of the ground floor, with a bipartite mullion and transomed stained glass stair window above. There is a canted dormer at the attic floor and regular fenestration in the flanking bay to the right. The outer right bays are advanced, and there is a modern garage at the ground floor with windows on the left return.

The north elevation has a wing advanced to the left, while the remainder is not visible as of 2000. The west elevation is asymmetrical, with a gabled bay to the right and a window on the ground floor of the left bay.

The villa features a variety of timber sash and case windows, a green-grey slate roof with lead ridges, coped stone skews, and corniced gablehead and wallhead stacks with circular cans. The cast-iron rainwater goods have decorative top hoppers.

Inside, the ground floor retains some mouldings, and there is a staircase with turned timber balusters.

The property also includes square-plan gatepiers to the south with shallow pyramidal caps and a low wall between them, along with granite and brick coped rubble walls surrounding the remainder of the site.
