Description
54 Rubislaw Den South is a villa built in 1900 by Arthur Clyne, with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay structure made of rough-faced coursed grey granite, featuring finely finished light grey dressings. The building has a base course, architraved openings, panelled aprons on the ground floor, a cill course on the first floor, and overhanging eaves with timber bargeboards.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, with regular window arrangements on the ground and first floors in the central and right bays. There is a tripartite rectangular dormer in the attic. The left side has an advanced gabled bay with a four-light canted window on the ground floor, which has a parapet forming a balcony above on the first floor. This bay also features a tripartite window on the first floor and a five-light canted oriel window with pilastered mullions set in the gablehead, topped with a terracotta finial.
The east elevation is also asymmetrical and consists of three bays, with two gabled bays on the left. There is a doorway on the right at ground level, with a deep entablature supported by pilastered brackets and stylised scrolls above. The entrance features a panelled timber door with a fanlight, and there is a window on the first floor above. The left bay has regular fenestration, while the right bay has a four-light canted window on the ground floor and a bipartite window above on the first floor.
The north elevation has a wing that is advanced to the centre, with a modern double conservatory on the left return. The remainder of this elevation was not visible in 2000. The west elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a gabled bay on the right and windows on the left at ground level, with a stair window above. The fenestration on the outer left is irregular.
Most of the windows are replacement timber sash and case, with PVCu windows at the rear. The roof is covered in purple grey slate with terracotta ridges, and there are corniced gablehead stacks and stacks breaking the pitch with circular cans. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 2000.
There is an ancillary structure consisting of a rectangular-plan granite garage to the northeast, featuring a broad boarded and glazed timber door and a pyramidal slate roof. The square-plan gatepiers are made of tooled ashlar with shallow pyramidal caps to the south, and there is a low coped wall between them topped with modern railings. The remainder of the boundary consists of granite and brick coped rubble walls.
