Description
This is a two-storey, basement and attic villa with gothic and classical detailing, built in the late 19th century by architects W and J Smith & Kelly. The house is located at 44B Rubislaw Den South, Aberdeen.
The principal South elevation is symmetrical, constructed of finely finished tooled grey granite with Aberdeen bond granite elsewhere. A pilastered and entablatured doorway is centrally located on the ground floor, accessed by stone steps with flanking railings, and features a panelled timber door with a decorative fanlight above. A window with an architrave and panelled apron is centrally positioned on the first floor, incorporating scrolled details and a geometric glazing pattern. A gableted dormer window is located above on the attic floor, and gabled bays extend to the left and right. A three-light canted window extends through the basement, ground, and first floors, with bipartite windows set into the gableheads, each with a flat hoodmould above.
The East elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a gabled bay with a single-storey ingleneuk advanced to the centre, containing small, decoratively leaded windows, and a wing advanced to the right with irregular window placement. The North elevation is also asymmetrical, with a gabled wing projecting to the left and predominantly regular window fenestration. A rectangular dormer sits in the centre bay of the attic floor, accompanied by a modern skylight to the right.
The West elevation, with an M-gabled form, has granite steps ascending from right to left to a first-floor doorway, featuring a panelled timber door with fanlight, flanked by a leaded window. A small window is centrally placed on the first floor, and a gableted dormer window tops the centre of the attic. A flue rises from the basement of the gabled bay to the right, and various openings are situated below the staircase.
The building incorporates a variety of timber sash and case and casement windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring lead ridges. Chimney stacks have coped cornices and circular cans. The gable ends are finished with coped stone skewputts, some blocked and moulded. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior was not inspected in 2000.
To the South, square-plan ashlar gate piers are surmounted by pyramidal caps, connected by low stepped Aberdeen bond ashlar walls and simple railings, with two-leaf iron gates featuring scrolled piers that sweep down to the centre. Brick and granite coped rubble walls form the remainder of the boundary.
