Description

34 Rubislaw Den South is a villa dating from 1900, designed by Brown and Watt. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay structure situated in Aberdeen. The building is primarily constructed of tooled coursed grey granite ashlar on its south elevation, with finely finished chamfered margins. The remaining elevations are of Aberdeen bond granite rubble. A base course and a dividing string course, functioning as the first-floor cill course, are present. The roof features overhanging eaves with timber bargeboards, alongside decorative carved timber details within the gableheads.

The south (principal) elevation is asymmetrical. A round-arched bipartite window occupies the centre bay at ground floor, incorporating an oculus between, set within a deeply chamfered segmental-arched recess. Above this is a recessed balcony enclosed by a balustraded parapet. A glazed and panelled timber door, with a small-pane fanlight, is centrally positioned. The roof sweeps down above the door, and a rectangular dormer punctuates the attic floor. To the left, a five-light rectangular-plan window is advanced at ground level, with a bipartite window above. A crenellated parapet incorporates an angle turret with oval openings and a flagpole on top. The chamfered outer left angle below the turret features three vertical openings with ogee lintels and decorative glazing below the turret’s corbels. A gabled bay is slightly advanced to the right, featuring a bipartite window to ground floor and a tripartite window to both the first and attic floors.

The east elevation has a gabled bay on the left, with a window positioned to the left of the first floor, and a tripartite window in the gablehead. An advanced two-storey block occupies the centre and right bays. A round-arched stained glass window is located to the left of the ground floor. The fenestration is irregular to the remainder of the elevation. A chamfered round-arched doorway, featuring a keystone detail, provides access to an open porch. A panelled timber door is flanked by stained glass panels and a distinctive letterbox fanlight. A blind tablet sits above the doorway, and a bipartite window is positioned on the first floor, topped by a crenellated parapet.

The north elevation was not inspected in 2000.

The west elevation, also asymmetrical and gabled, has a window to the left of the first floor, and a pair of windows set within the gablehead.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with small-pane upper sashes, although some on the first floor of the south elevation have been replaced with PVCu. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead ridges. Corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks, along with stacks breaking the pitch and featuring circular cans, are present. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also a feature.

The interior was not inspected in 2000.

Gatepiers of square-plan ashlar, topped with pyramidal caps, mark the entrance on the south side, with low, stepped walls connecting them. The remaining boundary walls are constructed from granite and brick rubble with coped tops.
