Description

Marchmont is a villa built in 1905-6, designed by George Anderson. It is a two-storey and attic building with three bays, situated at 42 Rubislaw Den South, Aberdeen.

The principal south elevation is asymmetrical. A panelled timber door with a leaded fanlight is centrally located on the ground floor, with a further panelled door and leaded upper pane and fanlight leading to an iron balcony in the centre and left bays of the first floor. A shallow bowed window to the left supports the balcony, and a gableted bipartite window breaks the eaves on the first floor, while a rectangular dormer is centrally placed in the attic. An advanced gabled bay to the right features a four-light canted window extending through both the ground and first floors, supporting a projecting gablehead.

The east elevation, also asymmetrical, has two bays with single windows offset to the right of the ground and first floors on the left bay. An advanced gabled bay is to the right, with regular fenestration, and two narrow windows to the left return and a single window to the right return. A single-storey and attic wing adjoins the outer right, with irregular ground floor fenestration and flat-roofed bipartite windows breaking the eaves on the upper floor, finished with a horizontal window to the outer right.

The north elevation features an advanced wing to the left with a central ground floor doorway and a pair of small square windows above. Regular fenestration is found elsewhere, with regular openings to the ground floor of the right return and a flat-roofed window breaking the eaves on the first floor to the right. Small windows are on the ground floor of the centre bay, while mullioned and transomed stair windows, featuring stained glass, are above. A glazed door with flanking glazed panels and a stained glass fanlight is in the bay to the right. A single window is on the first floor above, and a piended dormer with a catslide roof sits in the centre of the attic, flanked by bipartite rectangular dormers to the left and right.

The west elevation has two windows centrally placed on the ground floor, with a gablet above.

The building has predominantly timber sash and case windows with geometrically leaded and stained glass upper sashes, with some diamond-pane leaded windows. It is roofed with grey slate, featuring lead ridges, and has coped wallhead stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with a top hopper dated 1906 on the south elevation.

Inside, a mosaic floor extends to the porch, alongside a glazed inner door with unusual tracery, a timber staircase, decorative cornicing, mouldings and some fireplaces.

Balustrades run along the east side of the house. Square-plan, tooled granite ashlar gate piers with pyramidal caps mark the south entrance, with low stepped walls connecting them. Brick and granite coped rubble walls form the remainder of the boundary.
