Description

36 and 38 Rubislaw Den South is a villa built in 1899 by W and J Smith and Kelly. This two-storey and attic building features a three-bay design. The exterior is made of tooled coursed grey granite, with contrasting light grey long and short dressings finely finished on the south elevation, while the rest of the structure is constructed from coursed Aberdeen bond granite rubble. Notable architectural elements include a base course, long and short quoins, overhanging eaves, and timber bargeboards.

The south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a central two-leaf panelled timber door within a chamfered doorway, topped by a fanlight. There is a single window on the first floor with a projecting cill and iron brattishing, along with a rectangular dormer in the attic. The flanking bay to the right has tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, while the gabled bay to the left is advanced and includes a five-light canted window at ground level, a tripartite window above, and a harled and half-timbered gablehead with a four-light oriel window on brackets at the center.

The east elevation is also asymmetrical with irregular fenestration, featuring a gabled bay on the left and a single-storey wing advanced to the outer right. The north elevation was not visible in 2000. The west elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a gabled bay advanced to the right, with single windows on the left at both ground and first floors. There is a later 20th-century flat-roofed glazed timber porch on a granite plinth, accessed by iron steps at the center, and two windows in a recessed bay to the left.

The villa predominantly has timber sash and case windows, with leaded upper sashes on the ground floor and small-pane upper sashes on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead ridges, along with corniced gablehead and ridge stacks with circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron, with decorative top hoppers.

The interiors were not seen in 2000. The property also includes square-plan granite ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps on the south side, a low stepped granite wall between them topped with decorative iron railings, and brick and rubble coped walls surrounding the remainder of the property.
