Description
32 Rubislaw Den South is a picturesque villa dating from 1897, designed by Brown and Watt. It is a two-storey and attic building of three bays, constructed primarily of finely finished, tooled grey granite ashlar to the south elevation, with coursed granite rubble to the rest. A base course, chamfered reveals, a dividing string course, and granite mullions and transoms characterize the architectural detailing.
The south (principal) elevation is asymmetrical, with a gabled bay projecting to the left. This bay is distinguished by a five-light canted window on the ground floor, topped by a parapet forming a balcony to the first floor and a tripartite window above. A deeply chamfered oculus is set into the gablehead, with a moulded shaft rising from the centre to break the eaves and form a finial at the gable apex. To the right, an engaged entrance tower of square plan is set into the re-entrant angle. It features a broad, segmental-arched doorway with decoratively roll moulded reveals, a blind panelled hood mould enclosed by moulded shafts, a glazed timber door flanked by glazed panels and a fanlight, and a bipartite window to the first floor. A smaller bipartite window sits off-centre on the right side of the attic floor, with a window to the right return. A crenellated parapet rises to the right, incorporating arrowslit openings and surmounted by a weathervane. Bipartite windows are located on the ground and first floors of the bay to the right; a chamfered outer right angle houses single windows on both floors.
The east elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring irregular fenestration to the left bay, with advanced bays to the right, incorporating windows to the left return. The outer right section is harled. The north elevation is largely unexposed, but features a rectangular dormer with stained glass on the left side of the attic floor. The west elevation is gabled and asymmetrical, containing a bipartite window centred between a single window set to the left. A horizontal, shouldered opening rests within the gablehead.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with small-pane upper sashes on the ground floor and stained glass upper sashes on the first floor. A grey slate roof extends over the property, with lead ridges in certain areas. Coped stone skews have gableted skewputts. Gablehead stacks, topped with circular cans, are present. Cast-iron rainwater goods feature decorative top hoppers. The interior of the villa was not inspected in 2000.
Tooled granite ashlar square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps mark the entrance, these along with low granite walls forming a boundary to the south. Rubble walls comprise the remainder of the boundary.
