Description
Probably designed by Robert Gordon Wilson around 1901, with later additions, 66 Rubislaw Den South is a two-story and attic villa. The exterior is characterized by finely finished, tooled Aberdeen bond pink granite ashlar to the margins, with rubble to the rear. A rough-faced granite base course and a dividing string course are visible, along with hung Rosemary tiles on the gableheads. The eaves overhang, featuring timber bargeboards. The ground floor angles are deeply chamfered and corbelled to form a right angle at the first floor level, with a narrow chamfered window containing decorative leaded glass at each corner.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, with a five-light window projecting at ground floor level to the left. A gabled bipartite window breaks the eaves on the first floor. Two gabled bays project to the right, displaying a pair of bipartite windows at ground floor level. A four-light canted oriel window with half-timbered detailing below the cill sits on the first floor, with the gablehead advanced on timber brackets.
The east (entrance) elevation is also asymmetrical and three-bayed; a gabled bay is advanced to the right, and a flat-roofed garage addition is present at ground floor level. A flat-roofed porch occupies the re-entrant angle to the left, with a window in the centre. A round-arched doorway is set into the left return, featuring a two-leaf panelled timber door with decorative door furniture and a fanlight. An open timber porch with timber balustrade connects the ground and first floors, and a pair of bipartite gabled windows break the eaves on the first floor.
The north elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a bipartite window on the ground floor to the left. Windows breaking the eaves with catslide roofs are centrally and to the left of the first floor. A piend-roofed dormer punctuates the attic floor, flanked by a pair of two-pane skylights. A former service wing is advanced to the right of the ground floor, while a modern timber conservatory addition is present on the centre and left return, painted brown.
The west elevation is asymmetrical and M-gabled, having a tripartite stair window within the gable on the left. Irregular window placement flanks the stair window to the left, with a small window set in the gablehead. A timber lean-to conservatory is attached to the ground floor, and a curved outer right angle incorporates a small arrowslit window with leaded glass alongside a three-light oriel window on the first floor.
Most windows are timber-framed with decoratively leaded top hoppers, although some are timber sash and case. The roof is Rosemary tiled with terracotta ridges. Coped wallhead and gablehead stacks are topped with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior is notably fine, retaining much of the original panelling, mouldings, fireplaces, door furniture and light fittings. An oak-panelled entrance hall and porch feature decorative plasterwork to the ceiling, and the staircase exhibits turned and blocked balusters.
Square-plan gatepiers mark the south boundary, connected by a low, stepped granite wall. Brick and granite coped rubble walls enclose the remainder of the property.
