Description

48 Rubislaw Den South in Aberdeen is a villa built in 1900 by John Cameron, with later additions and alterations. This two-storey and attic, three-bay rectangular-plan villa features a service wing at the rear. The exterior is made of rough-faced coursed grey granite ashlar, with finely finished long and short dressings on the south elevation, while the rest of the building is constructed from coursed rubble. Key architectural features include a base course, a dividing band course, a first-floor cill course, an eaves course, long and short quoins, and overhanging eaves.

The south elevation is symmetrical, featuring a pilastered doorway in the center bay at the ground floor, flanked by a pair of lamps. Stone steps lead up to a panelled timber door, which is surrounded by leaded panels and a fanlight. A window is located in the center of the first floor, with three-light canted windows in the ground floor bays to the left and right, and bipartite windows above on the first floor. There is also a skylight in the center of the attic floor.

The east elevation has a gablet detail at the center and an adjoining service wing on the outer right. The north elevation is nearly symmetrical, with small windows in the center bay at the ground floor and a large stair window above. The service wing is advanced to the ground floor of the bay on the left and has been extended to form a sun porch at the right return, with a window above on the first floor. A modern conservatory is present on the ground floor of the bay to the right, with a bipartite window above. The center of the attic floor features a broad rectangular dormer incorporating three bipartite windows.

The west elevation also has a gablet detail at the center and two windows to the left at the ground floor. The villa predominantly has two-pane timber sash and case windows, a piended grey slate roof with lead ridges, coped wallhead stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000.

There is an ancillary structure, including square-plan granite garage to the northwest, which has a broad boarded and glazed timber door, a pyramidal purple-grey slate roof with terracotta ridges, and a dormer at the center. Square-plan gatepiers are located to the south, with a low stepped granite wall between them, and brick and granite coped rubble walls surrounding the remainder of the property, along with a modern greenhouse adjoining to the north.
