Description

Cramond House is a villa located at 17 Rubislaw Den North in Aberdeen, designed by Matthews & Mackenzie in the early 20th century. This two-storey and attic building features five bays and classical detailing. The structure is primarily built from tooled coursed grey granite, with finely finished light grey granite dressings on the northern elevation, while the remainder is constructed from granite rubble. It has a rough-faced base course, architraved openings, cill courses on the ground and first floors, a dividing band course, an eaves course, and cornice, along with strip and long and short quoins.

The northern elevation is symmetrical, showcasing three pedimented bays at the center. It includes a Tuscan columned doorpiece at the ground floor, which supports an entablature and features a three-light oriel window. There is a round-arched rusticated doorway with a keystone detail, leading to a pilastered two-leaf timber door with a radial fanlight. An oculus is centered in the pediment, with regular fenestration in the flanking bays on both the ground and first floors. The bays on the left and right are slightly recessed, with shallow rectangular-plan bipartite windows and a single window above on the first floor. The attic floor has modern skylights.

The western elevation has single-storey additions at the ground floor. The southern elevation was not visible in 2000, and the eastern elevation features an advanced bay to the left with windows in the center and outer returns, while the remainder was also not seen in 2000.

The villa predominantly has timber sash and case windows and is topped with a piended grey slate roof that has lead ridges. It has corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks with circular cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000. There is an ancillary structure, a pedimented granite lodge located to the northwest of the villa. This lodge is made of tooled coursed grey granite with contrasting light grey dressings and has been extended to the south. It also features a piended grey slate roof with lead ridges.

The property includes gatepiers and boundary walls, consisting of two pairs of square-plan granite gatepiers with banded rustication, corniced necks, and spherical finials. Between these gatepiers are low coped rough-faced granite walls, with coped rubble walls making up the remainder of the boundary.
