Description
This is a house built in 1907 by W Henderson & Son, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of tooled, coursed grey granite to the ground floor of the north elevation, with rubble stone to the first floor and remaining elevations, with finely finished margins. The building has a rough-faced base course and contrasting light grey granite dressings, with chamfered margins to the first floor of the north elevation. A dividing string course is present, and there are queenpost details to the gableheads, with overhanging eaves featuring timber bargeboards.
The north (principal) elevation is symmetrical. A gabled bay is centrally positioned, and a flat-roofed porch is set into the ground floor, with a two-leaf panelled timber door reached by stone steps and a leaded fanlight. A recessed first floor window is located centrally. Gabled bays clasp the porch to the left and right, each with a three-light canted window to the ground floor, topped with a parapet forming a balcony to the first floor. Tripartite windows with hoodmoulds are present on the first floor. A two-storey wing is attached to the outer right.
The west elevation is gabled, but largely obscured by the two-storey wing. A glazed ground floor is visible to the outer left and right, with simple pilasters and channelled rustication. A three-light window is present on the left return at the first floor.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, with a flat-roofed addition to the ground floor of the central bay. Two-light stair windows are above. A five-light canted window with a piended slate roof is present on the ground floor of the bay to the left, complemented by a bipartite window to the first floor and a piend-roofed tripartite attic window. A substantial wing projects forward to the right bay, featuring irregular fenestration. A carved plaque is visible on the left return, inscribed with "EGO SUM LUX MUNDI" (therefore I am the light of the world).
The east elevation is gabled, with a piend-roofed, rectangular-plan ingleneuk advanced to the right of the ground floor. The remainder of the elevation has irregular fenestration, and a wing is attached to the outer left.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with delicately leaded upper panes on the north elevation, and some leaded panes elsewhere. The roof is covered in slate, with lead ridges and slate ventilators to the rear pitch. Gablehead stacks have coped details and octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place. The interior was not inspected in 2000.
Low coped ashlar boundary walls are present to the north, flanked by square-plan gatepiers and high walls stepped up to the northwest. Rubble walls define the remainder of the boundary.
