Description
68 Rubislaw Den North is a villa designed by George Coutts and dated 1905. This two-storey and attic building features three bays and incorporates gothic detailing. The south elevation is constructed from finely finished, tooled coursed grey granite ashlar at the margins, while the rest of the building is made from coursed dark grey granite rubble. It has a rough-faced base course, chamfered cills, a dividing string course, and swept-down overhanging eaves with timber bargeboards.
The principal elevation on the south side is asymmetrical, featuring a pointed-arched doorway with chamfered reveals located near the centre of the ground floor. This doorway has a two-leaf gothic panelled timber door with an iron bell-pull and two plaques above. To the right of the door, there is a mullion and transomed window, and further right on the first floor, a tripartite window is set within a tall gable. To the left, a broad five-light canted bay projects from both the ground and first floors, breaking the eaves with an elegantly swept-down roof. This bay has a gableted timber lucarne at the centre of its advanced slate roof, topped with an iron weathervane finial.
The east elevation is gabled and asymmetrical, featuring a piend-roofed ingleneuk on the left at the ground floor, with a single window above it and a tall stair window to the right. There is also a wing adjoining the outer right side. The north elevation has not been seen since 2000, while the west elevation is gabled.
The villa predominantly features timber casement windows with small-pane glazing at the top and two-pane glazing below. The roof is covered in grey slate with a lead ridge, and there are corniced gablehead stacks with circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.
Inside, the dining room includes a Tudor-style chimneypiece located in the ingleneuk, and there is notable door furniture; the interior was last seen before 1991.
The property also includes square-plan gatepiers on the south side, which are canted at the necks and topped with shallow splayed circular caps. There is a low Aberdeen bond granite wall between the gatepiers, and the remainder of the boundary is formed by brick-coped rubble walls, with a modern garage adjoining the boundary wall to the southeast.
