Description

Dunfermline Cemetery, located on Halbeath Road in Dunfermline, features an entrance gateway and internal gateways that were likely constructed around 1908, along with a cemetery lodge on Halbeath Road. The boundary wall along Bellyeoman Road and a modified dividing wall were probably built in 1863 for the original cemetery. The gateways are made of rusticated sandstone ashlar, while the walls consist of coursed sandstone rubble with rounded coping.

The entrance gateway includes a pair of gatepiers, with additional outer gatepiers for narrower pedestrian entrances. All gatepiers are square in plan and feature rusticated bands. At the top, there is a frieze with a cornice above, and they are surmounted by moulded coping with a concave band and ball finial. The decorative wrought-iron gates are flanked by coursed rock-faced sandstone wing walls that have a convex segmental plan, with chamfered ashlar coping. The walls step down at the center to either side, where they are topped with wrought-iron railings that incorporate simple Art Nouveau motifs. The left wall adjoins the cemetery lodge.

The cemetery dividing wall runs north to south, separating the older and newer sections of the cemetery. There are two gateways at intervals, each featuring a pair of square-plan gatepiers with rusticated bands and a moulded apex topped with an obelisk finial that has a band around its base.

The boundary wall along Bellyeoman Road is a tall section running east to west, with a plain entrance to the east near the junction with Robertson Road.
