Description
Castlegate Cemetery, located at Castlegate and Galahill in Jedburgh, features a lower section that dates from the early 19th century, while the upper section began being used for burials in the early 20th century. The cemetery is situated on sloping ground that falls to the east, with a terrace wall and steps at the center. It is enclosed by a cream sandstone rubble wall topped with semi-circular ashlar coping.
The eastern gates, known as the Galahill Gates, consist of a pair of polygonal ashlar piers with shallow pyramidal caps set on square bases. To the left, there is a low ashlar quadrant wall with saddleback coping, which supports spearhead railings that end at a smaller square pier featuring chamfered arrises and a similar cap. This wall continues as a rubble boundary wall. To the right, a low straight wall at a right angle to the gates mirrors the design of the quadrant wall and connects to the boundary wall. Between the piers, there are cast-iron spearhead gates and railings.
The western gates, known as the Castlegate Gates, are formed by three square cream ashlar piers, each with sunken panels on every face and two-stage shallow pyramidal caps and bases. To the right, there are two-leaf cast-iron gates for vehicle access, while to the left, there is a single pedestrian gate. The boundary wall matches the design of the eastern gates.
