Description
Lynwell and Castle Dene is a mid to later 19th century, two-storey, four-bay free-standing office building that has been converted into flats. It is set into a slope that rises to the south, with the upper flat accessed from street level to the south. The building is constructed of coursed grey stugged sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings.
On the west elevation, the ground has been cleared, leaving a declining rubble base course to the left, while the far right bay remains blind and submerged. The two central windows have been partially blocked to accommodate modern windows, and there is a modern door with a four-pane fanlight to the left, labeled Lynwell. The original single windows are still present in all four upper bays.
The south elevation is a single storey with a gabled roof and a projecting stack at the centre, which has been reduced by quadrant shoulders at the gablehead. There is a single window on the outer left, a modern door labeled Castle Dene, and a large adjoining window that fills a broad former works entrance to the right.
The north elevation features a blank gable with a stack, similar to the south elevation, and has an advanced chimney breast. The building is located close to the neighbouring house at 76 Castlegate, which has a separate listing.
The upper flat has 8-pane timber sash and case windows, and the building is finished with ashlar skews and console skewputts, topped with grey slates.
