Description

3 Stuart Street in Rothesay, Bute, is an early 19th-century flatted house that was converted into flats in 1937 and refurbished in the later 20th century. The building features a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay design in a plain classical style, with a projecting stair tower at the rear. It is constructed from snecked rubble sandstone, with polished red sandstone dressings, a raised base course, a raised lintel course, and corniced eaves. The quoins are made of droved red rubble, and there are droved long and short surrounds to the polished openings, along with projecting cills. The rear and east sides are finished in random rubble sandstone, while the west side is rendered.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a central entrance at ground level featuring a corniced door surround and a date stone inscribed "1626 - 1826." Inside, there is an enamel-tiled vestibule and replacement part-glazed timber doors that are recessed within and to the right of the entrance. There are single windows at ground level in the outer left and right bays, and single windows in all bays on the first floor.

The south (rear) elevation has a full-height stair tower at the center, with single windows on both floors in the flanking bays to the left and right. The building is fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows on both elevations. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring raised skews and coped rendered apex stacks on the east and west sides, along with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1996.
