Description
2 Upper Union Street in Rothesay, Bute, is a two-storey, three-bay flatted house built in 1772 and rehabilitated in 1985. This symmetrical building showcases a plain classical style and forms the end of a terrace. It has entrances at both the front on the ground floor and the rear on the first floor. The exterior is made of random red rubble sandstone with polished red sandstone dressings. Notable features include a raised eaves course, corniced eaves, prominent long and short quoins, tooled long and short rubble surrounds to the polished openings, and a pilastered entrance. The rear has harl-pointed rubble with raised, rendered surrounds and an exterior red-brick stair that is centered.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a timber panelled door in the center of the ground floor, topped by a five-light fanlight. The doorpiece is adorned with fluted Doric pilasters, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice. Above the entrance, there is a single window, with additional single windows in both outer bays on each floor.
The east (rear) elevation features a cast-iron balustraded stair leading to the upper entrance, which is centered on the first floor and includes a timber panelled door. There is a small single window in the bay to the right, with single windows in both outer bays on each floor.
The building has replacement 12-pane timber sash and case windows facing Union Street and replacement 2-pane timber glazing at the rear. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring raised skews and rendered, corniced apex stacks with various circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The boundary wall consists of a low coped random rubble wall along Union Street, with a replacement timber pedestrian entry gate.
