Description

61 High Street in Rothesay, Bute, is an early 19th century building, dating around 1820. It is a symmetrical pair of two-storey, three-bay cottages that form a low rectangular-plan terrace with shops on the ground floor. The exterior features painted harl with painted margins and overhanging eaves. At the rear, there is a single-storey, rectangular-plan outbuilding (No 65) constructed from part whitewashed random rubble.

The entrance elevation for Nos 61 and 67 has boarded timber doors located in the penultimate bays to the outer left and right, with flanking single windows. There are also single windows at ground level in the outer right and left bays, and a square opening in the centre that was formerly a sink. The first floor is regularly fenestrated.

The windows have 12-pane timber casement glazing, and the roof is covered with graded grey slate. It features raised skews, coped apex stacks at both the north and south ends, a coped ridge stack at the centre, and various circular cans.

Inside, the building has been converted for shop and office use, with some decorative timber panelling around the fireplace, carved thistle motifs, and egg-and-dart cornice carving.

No 65 has been converted for use as a store, featuring single openings in the bays to the left and right of the centre, along with a boarded timber addition to the outer right. It also has a graded grey slate roof.
