Description

Larkhall Cemetery is an earlier-mid 19th century walled cemetery located on Duke Street, Meadowhill, Larkhall. It was originally square in plan and has been extended to the east, with a later, late 19th/early 20th century entrance and a rectangular-plan additional graveyard situated to the north.

The original southern cemetery is accessed through ornate gates set within stop-chamfered square-plan piers constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar. These piers feature a band cornice and shallow pyramidal caps. The wrought-iron gates have geometric banding and downswept, foliate-panelled upper borders, alongside a plain iron pedestrian gate to the south. The surrounding walls are constructed of squared sandstone rubble with a stugged curved ashlar cope. This area contains headstones primarily dated from the earlier to late 19th century.

The northern cemetery is entered through a pair of tall, red sandstone panelled ashlar gatepiers, set back on raised, panelled plinths. These piers have cantilevered cornices and cavetto-edged pyramidal caps topped with ball finials. A stugged and snecked red sandstone ashlar quadrant wall, with a ridged cope, leads to a further pair of similar piers. Decorative wrought-iron gates feature foliate scrolls ascending to the centre, flanked by plain railings along the quadrant walls. The cemetery is enclosed by coped red sandstone walls. This section contains headstones predominantly dated from the late 19th and 20th centuries.

East gates consist of stop-chamfered tall cream sandstone piers on plinths with cantilevered cornices. They feature replacement wrought-iron gates, and retain the original scrolled wrought-iron pedestrian gate to the left, with a matching pier alongside.

A single-storey, three-bay symmetrical lodge with an attic sits on the southwest corner of the southern cemetery, with a single-storey, piended-roofed brick addition to the rear. The lodge is constructed from stugged grey sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. It has pitched-roofed dormer windows that break the eaves. Features include a base course, eaves course, stop-chamfered reveals to openings, aproned cills at ground floor, corniced cills to the dormer windows, and corbelled gablehead stacks.

The south elevation has two stone steps leading to a corniced, deep-set boarded door, with a rectangular boarded fanlight above. A barred window is at ground level, with a dormer window above in the flanking bays. The east and west side elevations have a barred window at ground level offset to the right on the east side, and a gablehead stack above. The lodge has 2-pane timber sash and case windows (boarded and barred) at ground level. The roof is grey slate, with centred rooflights to each pitch, corniced stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 1997.
