Description

Allenvale Cemetery, Aberdeen

This cemetery complex dates to around 1880 and comprises coursed granite rubble walls in Aberdeen bond, extending north and south of Allenvale Road.

South Cemetery

The southern cemetery is enclosed by coursed granite walls with Aberdeen snecking and saddleback coping. Access is provided by 2-leaf decorative cast-iron gates with pedestrian gates to the left and right on the north, west and east sides; steps at the gateways face south onto Riverside Drive. The square-plan gatepiers have squared rough-faced battered bases, stop-chamfered shafts, and corniced gableted caps to the south cemetery, flanked by saddleback-coped granite ashlar low quadrant walls.

North Cemetery

The northern cemetery is terraced with three chambers. It features tooled coursed granite walls with shallow-pointed coping. There are four decoratively chamfered gatepiers to the west, flanked by low coped granite walls and 2-leaf cast-iron gates. At the centre and east of the south wall are square-plan granite ashlar gatepiers with corniced necks and gableted caps, with 2-leaf cast-iron gates, and walls flanking the gatepiers stepped down. A boarded timber door sits between the two south gates. The low coped east wall is stepped up with cast-iron railings.

Lodge

Dated 1889, this single-storey building with attic is positioned to the northwest of the south cemetery. It is a 3-bay structure built in coursed squared rough-faced grey granite with architraved surrounds, cill course, long and short quoins, projecting cills to the south and east elevations, terracotta finials at the apex of gables, and timber bargeboards.

The north (entrance) elevation is asymmetrical, with a gabled porch advanced to the centre and a panelled timber door reached by two stone steps, topped by a letterbox fanlight. A pilastered bipartite window occupies the flanking bay to the left. To the right of the doorway is a tooled datestone reading "1889", and to the outer right angle is a gabled 4-light pilastered canted window with a bull's-eye window set in the gablehead.

The west elevation is asymmetrical with two bays. A window occupies the bay to the right, whilst the bay to the left is gabled with a window to the attic floor. A canted window is positioned at the outer left angle. An Aberdeen bond granite wall extends to the outer right, forming a gateway to an outbuilding enclosure and boundary walls south of the lodge.

The south elevation is asymmetrical. The ground floor is predominantly obscured by a harled flat-roofed addition. A gabled bay to the left contains a window set in the gablehead. A gableted dormer to the right of the attic features a tripartite window, with small modern skylights to the attic. A rectangular-plan wing adjoins at the outer right angle, with a south boundary wall meeting the wing at its centre at a gableted bay containing a boarded timber door to the right return.

The east elevation is near-symmetrical and two-bayed with a gable. It has regular fenestration to the ground floor. A wing is advanced out the outer left angle, with a pilastered bipartite window to the centre and a panelled timber door to the right return.

The lodge is predominantly fitted with 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with green-grey slate and features decorative terracotta ridge tiles. A corniced granite ashlar wallhead and gablehead contain circular chimney cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted throughout.

The interior was not seen in 1999.

James Saint Monument

This monument, designed by J B Pirie in 1892, stands adjoining the northeast wall of the south cemetery. It is constructed of granite ashlar and comprises a simple plinth base with an elongated ionic capital surmounted by an inscription panel within a decorative concave-shouldered surround. Two horizontal bands of scrolls and an architraved surround frame the inscription, topped by a low block pediment ornamented with anthemion motifs and a decorative finial. J B Pirie's monogram appears on the left return, and John Morgan's monogram on the right return.
