Description

The property at 36 Garvock Hill, Dunfermline, is a pair of semi-detached houses dating from the early 20th century, with later additions. The houses are two storeys and an attic, arranged in a U-shaped plan, and designed with English vernacular detailing. The exterior is predominantly harled, with red brick dressings, a brick base course, and a brick cill course to the first floor of the flanking wings. The roof is covered in red tiles with deep, overhanging eaves, and features gambrel roofs to the flanking wings. The principal (south) elevation includes centrally positioned bays with decorative tiled banding and bellcast roofs.

The north (entrance) elevation features projecting wings on either side of a central block. Single-storey, flat-roofed sections, largely extended to form what appear to be garages, project forward from each wing. The rear, or inner return, of the wings is linked to the first-floor cill band by an angled section of wall topped with tumbling-in brickwork and a ball finial. The main body of the building has windows set back within a lean-to section, with wide, tripartite windows with slender timber mullions to the first floor. Round-arched recessed lobbies provide entrances, with panelled timber doors, and diamond-shaped windows above each archway.

The south (principal) elevation features round-arched entrances with brick surrounds, leading to recessed lobbies with glazed timber double doors. Each property has a canted bay window towards the centre of the building, with polychromatic brick banding above cill level. Single ground-floor windows are situated adjacent to the entrances on the outer side, and pairs of windows are located on the first floor. Gabled dormers with decorative motifs (a lion rampant on the left-hand property) are incorporated into the roof.

The east and west elevations each feature a narrow gabled bay with a first-floor window. A lean-to roofed bay has a ground-floor window, with a tall brick stack located between the sides. The property has mainly timber sash and case windows, along with some timber casements. The roof is tiled and hipped, with tall brick stacks positioned on the south pitch between the properties, and additional stacks on the east and west sides, as well as one on each of the north wings. Original cast-iron downpipes and hoppers are also present. The interior was not inspected in 1999.
