Description
The building comprises an early 20th-century gate lodge with later additions, situated on the Transy Estate near Dunfermline. It is roughly T-shaped, with extensions to the south and west, and exhibits free Scottish Renaissance/Baroque detailing, notably crowstepped gables and decorative cartouches. The principal north and east elevations are constructed from lightly droved sandstone ashlar, while elsewhere the walls are harled with ashlar dressings, except for a later flat-roofed extension to the west, which is concrete. A slightly projecting base course and overhanging eaves are present. Openings to the principal elevations feature roll-moulded jambs.
The east (entrance) elevation has three bays, with a breaking eaves gable to the central bay. This gable is surmounted by a free broken-bed semicircular pediment pierced by an obelisk-like moulding. A panelled timber door is set beneath the pediment, with a rectangular fanlight above, and an arrowhead window to the left. A window is located in the right bay. A gabled projecting bay to the left contains a mullioned bipartite window with an armourial panel surrounded by strapwork above, and a small window to the return. A late 20th-century extension is set back to the outer left.
The north elevation features a shallow canted three-light window to the gable end of the original block, and a decorative cartouche to the parapet above. An arrowhead opening is also present on the gable. A flat-roofed extension is set back to the right; it incorporates a window to the left and a narrow window to the right.
The west elevation is characterized by flat-roofed extensions projecting from the original block, with the gable end set back. An earlier extension has a mullioned bipartite window to the left, adjoined by a later part-glazed concrete extension to the right. A separate late 20th-century extension is set back to the outer right, aligning with the main body of the building.
The south elevation shows a gable end of the late 20th-century extension projecting forward from the gable end of the original block.
Multi-pane timber sash and case windows are found in the original block. Grey slate roofs are finished with red ridge tiles to the gabled sections. A tall coped stack with a frieze is present on the west wallhead of the original block, topped with round cans.
Railed walls and gatepiers run along the north and east sides. These consist of two sections of low sandstone ashlar wall with squared coping and railings; wide flanking piers and one to the centre of the north section, all with recessed banding. An identical pier is at one end of the east section, with a taller section of unrailed wall at the other. A pair of plain square-plan gatepiers, originally serving as the entrance to Garvock House, adjoin the north section of the wall to the east.
