Description

19, 21 and 23 Westgate is a pair of houses that have been converted into a shop. They were built in the early 19th century and are made of dressed sandstone with tooled margins, topped with a Gaelic clay tile roof and stone ridge copings. The building features four brick and stone chimney stacks, one of which is shared with No. 17 Westgate.

The structure is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical design. The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front, but retains an original plain stone doorway architrave on the left-hand side and a large semi-circular headed carriage arch on the right-hand side, which has rusticated voussoirs and a reveal. On the first floor, there are four late 19th-century sash windows with painted stone sills and keystones. The building also features rusticated quoins and a moulded timber eaves cornice.

Inside the carriage archway, the east wall has blocked door and window openings, while the west wall shows the lower part of a 17th-century external flue, complete with a moulded string and corbel, which belonged to an earlier adjoining building that was replaced in the mid-19th century. To the left side of the flue, there is a horse mounting block made of two dressed sandstone steps. Extensions to the rear of the building are not of interest.

This building is included for its group value with Nos. 11 and 13 Westgate.
