Description
84 and 86 Westgate Street is a former dwelling that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the early 19th century and incorporates an earlier structure that may date back to the 17th century. Internal alterations were made to 84 Westgate Street in the early 21st century.
The building's main elevation is constructed of brick with a painted stuccoed front. It features an end-gabled slate roof and two dormers with flat, lead roofs. The structure is two storeys high, with a cellar and an attic, and has a lateral, double-depth block range that extends at the rear.
The principal elevation presents a symmetrical four-bay frontage topped with a stone coped parapet. On the ground floor, 84 Westgate Street has a late 20th-century shopfront, while 86 has a shopfront framed by late 19th-century pilasters and brackets, with a cornice above. The first floor features two late 20th-century metal-framed two-over-two sash windows at 84 and two late 19th-century two-over-two sash windows at 86. All windows are set in original openings with slightly cambered brick arched heads and projecting stone sills. Behind the parapet, there are two early 19th-century roof dormers, each with a pair of casement windows that have glazing bars.
