Description

The Old Crown Inn, located on the east side of Westgate Street in Gloucester, is a shop and dwelling that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the early 19th century and underwent internal alterations and remodeling in 1989-90, alongside No. 83 Westgate Street, for its conversion to a public house. The building features a painted brick front block and a brick wing, topped with hipped slate roofs and a brick stack.

The structure is a double-depth block situated on the corner of Upper Quay Street, with access now through No. 83 Westgate Street. The rear wing likely originated as a house from the early 19th century on Upper Quay Street.

In terms of exterior details, the building stands three storeys tall with a cellar and has stone-coped parapets. The ground floor was remodeled in 1990, while the upper floors each contain two sash windows with glazing bars (3x4 panes), set in openings with flat-arched heads made of five raised-and-stepped stone voussoirs. On the east side of the front block, the ground floor features the return of the remodeled front to the right, with a sash window to the left. The upper floors have two widely spaced sashes, all with glazing bars and projecting stone sills.

At the rear, facing Upper Quay Street, the lower wing has a ground floor doorway to the left, topped with a rectangular fanlight framed by timber pilasters and an entablature. Each upper floor features two sashes with glazing bars, set in openings with rubbed brick flat arches and projecting stone sills. The interior of the building does not reveal any visible features of interest.
