Description

The Old Crown Inn, located on the west side of Westgate Street in Gloucester, is a town house dating from the early to mid 18th century. In the 19th century, it was used as a shop and dwelling, and it underwent alterations and remodeling internally in 1989-90, along with No. 81 Westgate Street, for conversion into a public house. The building is constructed of brick with stone details and has a slate roof.

It is a double-depth block with a rear wing and features three storeys, a cellar, and an attic. The front has raised and chamfered quoins at each corner and a crowning entablature with returned ends and a shallow gable, which previously had a pediment. The ground floor has a former 19th-century shop front that has been replaced by three late 20th-century sash windows above plain aprons, with a doorway to the right. This is framed by 19th-century pilasters with brackets at each end of the fascia.

On the first floor, there are two sashes with segmental heads and glazing bars (3x4 panes) set in openings with stone Gibbs surrounds, segmental-arched heads with raised, triple-facet keystones, and projecting, moulded stone sills. The second floor has two sashes with segmental heads and glazing bars (4x3 panes) in openings with moulded stone architraves, segmental-arched heads with raised triple-facet keystones, and projecting, moulded stone sills above stone aprons. In the gable, there is an oculus with cross glazing bars in a keyed stone frame. The interior does not have any visible features of interest.
