Description

Nos. 1, 3, and 5 Westgate is a mid-18th century town house that has been divided vertically into three units with shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed of brick, with chevron dressed sandstone on the east side elevation and rusticated stone quoins. It features a stack and a timber eaves cornice that supports cast iron guttering. The structure has three storeys.

No. 1 is rendered and painted, with a late 20th century shop front, a mid-20th century enlarged first floor window, and a blocked second floor opening. No. 3 has an altered late 19th century shop front supported by three fluted columns and a fascia. It also features a late 19th century square bay window with sashes and glazing bars on the first floor, and a semi-dormer on the second floor in the form of a late 19th century canted bay window with sashes and a half-pyramid Welsh slate roof. No. 5 has an altered late 19th century shop front with three fluted columns supporting a fascia, an early 20th century bow window on the first floor, and a sash window with glazing bars and a stone sill on the second floor. The brickwork is painted. The rear extensions on the south side are not of interest. This building is included for its group value with Nos. 7 and 9 Westgate.
