Description

Number 34 and its north extension is a house and shop dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed from dressed sandstone, featuring painted rusticated quoins on the left-hand side and a moulded eaves cornice. The roof, added in the mid-20th century, is covered with concrete tiles and has stone gable copings, along with a kneeler on the left-hand side. There is a rendered stack on the left side with part-rendered stone and a stepped flue on the west elevation. The building has three storeys and two bays, with a mid-20th century shop front on the ground floor. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars, while the second floor features Yorkshire sashes also with glazing bars. All windows are adorned with painted moulded stone architraves and plain sills, and there is a string course between the floors. The listing includes a later extension at the rear, which faces Northgate. This extension is from the mid-18th century, built of brick on a stone plinth, with a mid-20th century concrete tiled roof and a tall brick stack on the right-hand side. It has two storeys with asymmetrical fenestration, which has been altered but includes Yorkshire sashes and mid-19th century sash windows, along with boarded and panelled doors.
