Description

The Town Hall, situated on Market Place in Guisborough, was constructed in 1821 on the site of a former toll booth, with a second floor added in 1870. It is built of dressed sandstone with a hipped and gabled Welsh slate roof, featuring stone gable copings, kneelers, and ball finials to the north gable, along with four stacks, one on the east side being truncated. Bands delineate the floors.

The symmetrical design is three storeys high, with five bays visible on both the north and south elevations. Pilasters are positioned between the first and second bays, and the fourth and fifth bays, supporting a simple moulded cornice. The north elevation features a shallow gable topped with a cartouche displaying the arms of the Chaloner family. A segmental arcade occupies the ground floor, featuring recessed mid-19th century three-light sash windows with glazing bars. Sash windows with glazing bars are present on the first floor. The second floor contains round-headed windows with sashes and casements incorporating gothic glazing bars.

The east and west elevations are divided into three bays by pilasters, supporting an eaves cornice and a shallow gable displaying an oval plaque marked "1870." The central bay of each eastern and western elevation features a doorway on the ground floor, a sash window with glazing bars on the first floor, and two round-headed windows with sashes and casements on the second floor.
