Description
15 Westgate Street is a former dwelling that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone alterations in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The building is constructed of brick with a slate roof, and the front elevation is faced in ashlar. It has a double-depth plan with a room extending at the rear, behind number 13 Westgate Street, which is also listed at Grade II.
The exterior features three storeys plus an attic, with a single-bay front. The principal elevation includes a 20th-century shopfront on the ground floor. On the first floor, there is a cornice that is recessed to form the lintel for a tripartite window with a semi-circular arch, which has a moulded architrave surround and a solid tympanum above the lintel. Below the sill of the second-floor window, there is a shallow panel across the width of the front, framed with a thin moulding. Both windows feature a wide central horned sash flanked by narrow horned sashes. The building is topped with a cornice above the fascia and a parapet.
Inside, the shop has 20th-century linings. The staircase was reinstated during the 21st-century alterations, but the upper floors have not been inspected. There is also a brick-walled cellar below.
