Description
13 Westgate Street is a former dwelling that has been converted into a shop. It was built in the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The building is constructed of painted brick with stone details and has a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with a short wing to the left at the rear of 11 Westgate Street, which is also a listed building.
The exterior is three storeys high and includes a cellar. The front elevation features a late 19th-century shop front on the ground floor, with moulded brackets at either end of the shop fascia. The upper floors are arranged in three bays, with each floor having three identical six-over-six timber-framed sash windows that have glazing bars. These windows are set in openings with flat, rubbed brick arches, raised keystones, and projecting stone sills. In the 19th century, the original timber crowning cornice and dormer windows were removed, as shown in a photograph from around 1904, and were replaced with a plain brick parapet that has stone capping.
Inside, the building was mostly relined in the 20th century and features a 20th-century staircase. On the second floor, in the front room, there is a mid-18th-century chimneypiece made of painted stone with a raised keystone in the lintel. The building also contains 18th-century panelled doors. In the brick-walled cellar, there is another 18th-century chimneypiece with a stone surround and a raised keystone in the lintel, as noted in the National Monuments Record.
