42 Monnow Street is a two-storey building with an attic, part of a double depth range that runs parallel to the street. The façade is faced in stucco and painted, with a 20th-century grey tile roof that has replaced the original stone slabs. The first floor features six 6 over 6 pane sash windows, each with keystones, and is accented by rusticated quoins and a band above the windows. The ground floor has late 20th-century shops with a central entrance, and a date plaque in the centre of the first floor indicates the year '1724'. The roof is plain and has three hipped dormers, each with 6 over 6 panes. The rear elevation is rendered and painted, displaying modern features. The interior of the ground floor has been completely opened up into one shop, while the upper floors were not accessible during the last survey in July 2004, but were reported to have no notable features.
